About Our Institute
Established in 2005, the Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI) is a premier autonomous research organization based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. We operate under the guidance of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, with a mandate to foster innovation in materials and manufacturing technologies.
Our mission is to conduct high-impact research that translates into industrial applications, contributing to economic growth and societal well-being. With state-of-the-art laboratories and a team of over 200 scientists, engineers, and support staff, we have completed more than 150 projects in collaboration with industry and academic partners worldwide.
AMPRI's research portfolio spans multiple domains including metallurgy, polymer science, ceramics, nanotechnology, and digital manufacturing. We are recognized for our expertise in developing lightweight materials for transportation, corrosion-resistant coatings for infrastructure, and biodegradable polymers for sustainable packaging.
Our institute is committed to nurturing talent through PhD programs, internships, and workshops, and we actively engage with the local community in Bhopal through outreach initiatives. AMPRI has been awarded the "Excellence in Research" prize by the Indian government three times in the past decade.
Research Divisions
Materials Synthesis & Characterization
This division focuses on designing and synthesizing new materials with tailored properties. Using advanced techniques like electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopy, we analyze microstructure, composition, and performance. Recent breakthroughs include high-entropy alloys for extreme environments and conductive polymers for flexible electronics.
We collaborate with international laboratories and maintain a repository of material data for industrial reference. Our characterization facilities are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
Advanced Manufacturing
We develop next-generation manufacturing processes such as 3D printing of metals and composites, hybrid machining, and robotic automation. Our work aims to enhance precision, reduce production time, and enable mass customization. A key project involves creating digital twins for smart factories.
The division operates a fully equipped pilot plant for scale-up trials and offers consultancy services to SMEs in Bhopal and across India. We have filed over 30 patents in innovative manufacturing methods.
Sustainable Technology
Our team works on renewable energy materials, waste valorization, and life-cycle assessment. Projects include perovskite solar cells, catalytic converters for pollution control, and bio-based plastics. We align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and India's National Action Plan on Climate Change.
We conduct environmental impact studies and provide policy recommendations to government bodies. The division also runs a training program on green technologies for industry professionals.
